Equipment
I began baking with a wooden spoon, some bowls, measuring cups, measuring spoons, a whisk and a cake tin. For some time I used an antique fish knife for decorating.
I am often asked ‘what are the basics you need to make a cake’. In addition to quality ingredients, some mixing bowls and bakeware, ideally you will have digital scales, measuring cups , measuring spoons, a pallet knife, a wooden spoon and a whisk. Measuring is a very important aspect of baking, it will ensure you have a consistent approach to yield the best results.
Over the years, my beloved collection has grown. I am very specific (maybe on the verge of obsessive) how my utensils are cleaned and stored. Some utensils I have collected abroad, some have been gifts, some I have bought from flea markets and some in charity shops.
I value my kitchen appliances. My KitchenAid Stand mixers, hand mixer and my Magimix save me a great deal of time, with 2 small children time is very valuable to me. They also allow me to be more creative, productive and experimental with Meringue and other creations that would otherwise be a challenge. So, although they are not essential they are invaluable to me, one of the best acquisitions I have ever made! Please don’t be discouraged if you don’t have a stand mixer or specialised equipment. It’s amazing how resourceful you can be with a wooden spoon and a whisk!
Here is some of my most used kitchenware.
